Do you need a passport for a cruise from Mobile?

Most Carnival cruises from Mobile are round trips, and on those a U.S. citizen can board with a birth certificate and a government-issued photo ID instead of a passport. Two sailings are different. Carnival Spirit's 16-night voyage of 29 March 2027 ends in Seattle, so it is not a closed loop and Carnival requires a passport book or card. Carnival Valor's Caribbean and Panama voyage of 26 September 2027 calls in Colombia, where Carnival also requires one, and in Panama, where only passport book holders may go ashore. Carnival recommends a passport book on every sailing, and The Bahamas says passports are required to enter.

On a cruise that starts and ends in Mobile, a U.S. citizen usually does not need a passport to board Carnival's ship. U.S. Customs and Border Protection, CBP, calls this a closed-loop cruise, and federal rules accept a birth certificate with a government-issued photo ID instead. The terminal's own security page describes Mobile's sailings the same way and still recommends a passport.

Two sailings on our schedule break that pattern. Carnival Spirit's last trip from Mobile is one-way to Seattle, and Carnival Valor's Caribbean and Panama voyage calls at ports where Carnival makes a passport mandatory even on a round trip.

Everything below is for U.S. citizens unless it says otherwise. Carnival decides at the terminal if you board, and it says guests without the right documents are not allowed on the ship and get no refund, so its page is the one to follow. The countries you visit set their own rules for going ashore.

Do you need a passport to cruise from Mobile?

Not on most round trips, if you are a U.S. citizen. Carnival accepts a U.S. birth certificate with a government-issued photo ID on cruises that begin and end at the same U.S. port, which covers the Bahamas and most Caribbean trips. The exceptions are Carnival Spirit's one-way voyage to Seattle and Carnival Valor's voyage to Colombia and Panama.

Carnival highly recommends a passport book for everyone anyway, valid for at least six months beyond the end of the trip. It gives three reasons. Re-entering the United States can be slower without one. You would need one to fly abroad and join the ship if you missed it in Mobile. And you would need one to fly home if an emergency took you off the ship before the cruise ends.

What is a closed-loop cruise?

A cruise that starts and ends at the same U.S. port on the same ship, within the Western Hemisphere. That is the State Department's test in 22 CFR 53.2. On such a cruise, a U.S. citizen may show a government-issued photo ID with a birth certificate, Consular Report of Birth Abroad or Certificate of Naturalization instead of a passport.

Under the same rule, a citizen under 16 needs only one of those three documents, with no photo ID. CBP describes the same test in its FAQ and adds a warning: you may still be required to show a passport to enter the countries your ship visits, so check with your cruise line.

Which Mobile cruises are closed-loop?

Every round trip is, because each one returns to Mobile and stays in the Western Hemisphere. Carnival Spirit's 16-night voyage of 29 March 2027 is not, because it ends in Seattle. One round trip, Carnival Valor's Caribbean and Panama voyage, is closed-loop but still needs a passport under Carnival's rules, because it calls at Cartagena in Colombia.

What documents does Carnival accept on a round trip from Mobile?

On a closed-loop round trip, Carnival accepts a U.S. passport book or passport card, a state Enhanced Driver's License, a Certificate of U.S. Naturalization, a Native American Indian Card or, for U.S.-born citizens, a birth certificate with a government-issued photo ID. Passport books and cards must be valid for at least six months after the trip ends.

For the birth certificate, Carnival accepts an original or a copy issued by a state, county or city agency or a Department of Health and Vital Statistics. It says a clear photocopy of one of those does not need to be notarized or certified, and a laminated certificate is fine. A birth certificate card and a Consular Report of Birth Abroad also count.

Carnival does not accept these as proof of citizenship:

  • Baptismal papers, a hospital certificate or hospital-issued birth notice, or a Certificate of Live Birth
  • Puerto Rico birth certificates issued before 1 July 2010, which it says CBP does not accept
  • A driver's license on its own, a voter's registration card or military discharge papers
  • A mobile or digital version of a photo ID

Every guest aged 16 and older needs an unexpired government-issued photo ID alongside the birth certificate. Carnival accepts a driver's license or permit, a state, city or federal ID card, a U.S. military ID with photo, or a NEXUS, SENTRI or FAST card as photo ID. Guests aged 16 to 18 may use a school ID.

Should you bring the original birth certificate or a copy?

Bring the original or a certified copy. Carnival accepts a clear photocopy of a government-issued birth certificate, but the terminal's security page and FAQ both ask for an original or a certified copy, and CBP recommends an original or certified copy where possible while saying a copy may be accepted in some circumstances. An original or certified copy meets all three.

Can you use an Alabama REAL ID or driver's license?

Only as your photo ID. Carnival says a license with a gold circle and star is a REAL ID, which is not an Enhanced Driver's License and not proof of citizenship. Carnival lists only Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Vermont and Washington as issuing enhanced licenses, so an Alabama license needs a birth certificate or another citizenship document with it.

If you are flying to Mobile, Carnival points out that a REAL ID-compliant license or another accepted ID, such as a passport, has been needed at airport security for domestic flights since 7 May 2025.

Do you need a passport for a Bahamas cruise from Mobile?

Not to board Carnival's ship on a round trip, but The Bahamas asks for one. The Bahamas Department of Immigration says passports are required by all persons entering The Bahamas, and that U.S. citizens visiting for up to eight months need no visa. In Mobile, Carnival's closed-loop rule decides if you board.

That gap is the one CBP warns about. On our schedule, 51 sailings call at Celebration Key and 34 at Nassau, and others stop at Princess Cays, Bimini or Half Moon Cay, all in The Bahamas. Some trips also call at Key West, which is in Florida. Since nearly every stop is Bahamian, we would carry a passport book or card. The Bahamas guide compares the trips.

Do you need a passport for a Western or Southern Caribbean cruise from Mobile?

Not to board, on the round trips. They return to Mobile, and none of them calls in Colombia, Panama or the other places Carnival lists as exceptions, so a birth certificate and photo ID work for Carnival. Ashore, each country sets its own rules, and CBP says you may still need a passport to enter the countries your ship visits.

  • Western Caribbean. These trips call at ports such as Cozumel in Mexico, Belize City, Roatan in Honduras, Grand Cayman and Montego Bay in Jamaica. Carnival Spirit's 9-night trip of 20 March 2027 is a Carnival Journeys sailing, and Carnival's itinerary page shows it returning to Mobile.
  • Southern Caribbean. Carnival Valor's 14-night Journeys sailing of 16 January 2028 calls at Celebration Key, Amber Cove in the Dominican Republic, San Juan, St. Thomas, Aruba, Curaçao and Montego Bay, then returns to Mobile. San Juan and St. Thomas are in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, which CBP counts as part of the United States.

The Western Caribbean guide compares those trips.

What do you need for Carnival Spirit's one-way cruise to Seattle?

A passport book or passport card, valid for at least six months after the trip ends. Carnival requires one on cruises that begin and end in different U.S. home ports, and this voyage leaves Mobile on 29 March 2027 and arrives in Seattle on 14 April 2027. Its first port, Cartagena in Colombia, requires one under Carnival's rules too.

It is not a closed loop under the federal rule, because the ship does not come back to the port it left. After Cartagena, Carnival's itinerary page shows a Panama Canal transit day, then calls at Puntarenas in Costa Rica and Cabo San Lucas in Mexico before Seattle.

We would take the book rather than the card. Carnival says a passport card cannot be used to fly outside the United States, so if you had to leave the ship in Colombia, Costa Rica or Mexico, only a book would get you onto a flight home.

The trip home from Seattle is domestic. Carnival notes that since 7 May 2025 you need a REAL ID-compliant license or another accepted ID, such as a passport, at airport security, and CBP says a passport card can be used as identification at TSA checkpoints for domestic flights. The Carnival Spirit page and the Panama Canal page both list the voyage.

What do you need for the Carnival Journeys to Colombia, Panama, Costa Rica, Aruba and Curaçao?

A passport. Carnival Valor's 14-night Caribbean and Panama voyage of 26 September 2027 is a round trip from Mobile, but it calls at Cartagena in Colombia, where Carnival requires a passport book or card valid for six months past the trip. It also calls at Colón in Panama, where only passport book holders may go ashore.

Carnival's rules for each country on that voyage:

  • Colombia, at Cartagena. A passport book or card is mandatory for any cruise calling in Colombia, even one that starts and ends at the same U.S. port.
  • Panama, at Colón. You need a passport book to go ashore. Guests who sail on a passport card or another accepted document must stay on board while the ship is there.
  • Costa Rica, Aruba and Curaçao. The ship calls at Limón, Aruba and Curaçao. Carnival's documents page names no extra rule for these, and tells guests to check with their travel agent or the government authority for each port of call.

The voyage also calls at Ocho Rios in Jamaica and Cozumel in Mexico. Because a passport card will not get you ashore in Panama or onto an international flight, the book is the document to bring for this trip. Carnival Spirit's one-way voyage to Seattle also calls in Colombia and Costa Rica, and the section above covers it.

What documents do children need on a cruise from Mobile?

On a closed-loop round trip, a U.S. citizen under 16 needs only proof of citizenship, such as an original or a copy of a birth certificate, under the federal rule. Carnival asks for a government-issued photo ID only from guests aged 16 and older, and accepts a school ID from guests aged 16 to 18.

Carnival's passport rule for the Seattle voyage and the Colombia and Panama voyage lists no exception for children, so we would get every child on those trips a passport. If one or both parents are not sailing, Carnival strongly recommends bringing an original signed letter from the absent parent or guardian authorizing the child to travel. Where there is no second parent with legal claims, it suggests a court decision, a death certificate or a birth certificate naming only one parent instead.

For an internationally adopted child under 18 who was not issued a birth certificate, Carnival accepts a U.S. Certificate of Citizenship with the adoption paperwork as proof of citizenship.

What do green card holders and other non-U.S. citizens need?

Carnival publishes separate document pages for non-U.S. citizens, Canadian citizens and U.S. permanent residents, linked from its travel documents page. Follow the one that applies to you, because Carnival applies it at the terminal. For coming back into the United States, CBP says permanent residents show a valid permanent resident card, Form I-551, and do not need a passport.

The terminal's security page says the closed-loop requirements for U.S. and Canadian citizens are the same: proof of citizenship, plus a government-issued photo ID from age 16. Carnival publishes its own page for Canadian citizens, and that is the one to follow.

For The Bahamas, the Department of Immigration says U.S. residents holding a U.S. Alien Registration Card need no visa for visits of up to 30 days, and Canadian citizens need no visa. Visa rules depend on nationality, so check every country on your route as well as Carnival's page.

Does the name on your cruise booking have to match your ID?

Yes. Carnival says your first and last name on the cruise booking and any airline ticket must match the government-issued photo ID you travel with. If they differ because of marriage, divorce or a legal name change, bring the original or a clear copy of the document that links them, such as a marriage certificate, or Carnival may refuse boarding.

The same applies when your birth certificate and photo ID show different names. If you are about to marry and do not yet have the paperwork, Carnival suggests booking in your maiden name.

What should you do before you leave home?

Check Carnival's documents page against your booking a few weeks before you sail, and make sure every name matches. If you are on the Seattle voyage or the Colombia and Panama voyage, check that each passport is valid for six months past the last day of the cruise. Carry your documents yourself on embarkation day, not in a checked bag.

The terminal's parking instructions say the same about keeping documents with you. For the rest of the day, see the terminal guide and the first-time cruiser FAQ.
